The Specialty Care Team

Dr. Byers grew up in the small seacoast town of Rochester, New Hampshire. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Sciences from Colorado State University, and graduated as a University Honors Scholar. During his undergraduate tenure, he was inducted into various academic honor societies, including Phi Beta Kappa. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Cornell University, and he received several awards including the Baccalaureate Service Award and the Auxiliary of the American Veterinary Medical Association Prize. Dr. Byers also received the Iams and Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society Award for excellence in the practice of emergency and critical care medicine.

To earn Diplomate status, Dr. Byers undertook additional clinical training by successfully completing residencies and subsequent board examinations in emergency/critical care and small animal internal medicine. He is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (ACVECC) and the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) in small animal internal medicine.  

Dr. Byers currently holds adjunct faculty appointments at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in Blacksburg, VA, and at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. He is also an adjunct specialist in critical care and internal medicine for Veterinary Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group in Annapolis Junction, Maryland. He serves as a consultant in emergency medicine and internal medicine for the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), the largest online community of veterinarians worldwide. He is a member of the Editorial Review Board for the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and chairs the Recertification Committee for the ACVECC.

Dr. Byers’ commitment to elevate the care for companion animals is evidenced by that fact that he has published several scientific papers in various peer-reviewed journals, and has co-authored the textbook, Handbook of Veterinary Emergency Protocols: Dog and Cat.  Dr. Byers also enjoys clinical research, and his current areas of interest include interventional radiology and endoscopy, immune-mediated diseases, endocrinology, nephrology, and traumatic brain injury/neurologic critical care.

Head Technician

Molly Tamayo has worked as a licensed veterinary technician for more than 13 years in Omaha.  In addition to being a licensed veterinary technician, Molly has special interest in practice management, internal medicine, critical care, and anesthesia.  Of Molly’s 13 years in veterinary medicine 7 have been involved in specialty medicine where she especially enjoys the challenges and rewards of helping pets with more complex conditions.

Mandy Gryskiewicz has worked as a licensed veterinary technician since 2004 and has     been at Midwest Vet since 2006. Mandy enjoys all aspects of specialty medicine, with a special     interest in surgery, physical therapy and rehabilitation. She works closely with Dr. Thoesen and     consults with the orthopedic and physical therapy service through K-state University to ensure     that every patient is recovering to their fullest potential. Mandy enjoys seeing the progress that a     patient can make after a major procedure.

Nicole (Nikki) has worked as a licensed veterinary technician for 8 years in Omaha.  Nikki has a special interest in anesthesia monitoring, and post-operative patient care including pain management. She excels in radiology and all aspects of surgical care.

Rachael has been working as a licensed veterinary technician since 2005. She has 6  years of emergency and critical care experience and has a special interest in animal nursing. She excels in communicating with clients about recovery care for their pet.

Office Manager

Laura has been working in veterinary medicine for 15 years, seven of which have been in office management positions.  Laura has special interests in client education and is especially in tune with the pet owner experience. Thus, count on Laura to offer a sincere and compassionate touch to all communications.

Client Care Specialist/Veterinary Assistant

Julie has been with Midwest Vet for 2 years in client services and also assists in animal care.  She has a special interest in exotic animals and working closely with pet owners.  As well as being an avid diver, she enjoys volunteering at the local zoo.
